Over the course of winter 2013/14, the
Metier Ensemble will
present three concerts, Eclectic Collections, celebrating a
diverse array of 20th and 21st-century duos and trios for flute,
cello and piano. The second concert in the series focuses on
British repertoire for flute and piano, including Joe's duo,
Trapeze, commissioned
by the ensemble in 2010. The concert also features York Bowen's
Flute Sonata, a piece that justifies the composer's
reputation as the English Rachmaninov.
This unique venue offers a relaxing, informal environment for
musical events, sharing its space with the Foundry restaurant and
bar. In honour of this concert, the staff there have enterprisingly
concocted the Trapeze cocktail: chilled Aperol and
crisp prosecco, blended over ice, and topped with soda. Sounds
delicious!
The concert will feature Claire Overbury on flute, and Elspeth
Wyllie on piano.

[With] sympathetic keyboard from Joseph Atkins, this is a

A dazzling tour-de-force. - The Observer
[Cush Jumbo] makes the most of the jazzy music of the period
(with pianist Joseph Atkins playing a blast) and of Baker's oddly
angular, rhythmic, often comic, dancing style. Jumbo captures this
(on the evidence of film clips) to a t. - The

As the pianist behind the ragtime accompaniment, Joseph Atkins
is the silent engine behind the play's period character. -

A live piano accompaniment adds to the smoky back-bar feel of

[Cush Jumbo's] final rendition of The Times They Are

Reunited after their sell-out run of The Girl I Left Behind
Me at the Brits Off Broadway Festival in New York, Joe joins
Jessica Walker for a one-off performance as part of the 2013
Grassington
Festival.
Jess's new show, Pat Kirkwood is Angry, is a
co-production with Opera North and the Royal Exchange Theatre.
Written by Jess herself, the show re-imagines the life and songs of
the legendary Kirkwood, who was born in Salford in 1921 and was
named Britain's first wartime star. In this witty but poignant look
at the ephemeral nature of fame, Jess's dynamic stage presence and
superlative singing bring Pat Kirkwood's story to life again. This
show features classic songs by Noël Coward, Cole Porter and
Richard Rodgers, as well as some rediscovered gems.
Praise for The Girl I Left Behind Me, Brits Off
Broadway Festival, 59E59 Theaters, New York:
Ms. Walker and Mr. (Neil) Bartlett...together with the show's
musical director, Joe Atkins, a stylish pianist, bring ardent
affection and a sprinkling of sociology to their engrossing tour
through the lives and careers of these pioneering performers...she
has...a bright soprano of such melting beauty I think I could
listen to it forever. - The New York Times. Read
the full review
here.
The songs are a pleasure, Walker's singing is impeccable, and
Joe Atkins' piano accompaniment is first-rate. - Lighting
and Sound, America
Joe Atkins plays the piano and the two work together
beautifully...It would be tragedy for me not to acknowledge a
beautiful encore. Ms. Walker and Mr. Atkins did a fantastic job on
Take Me Home - a little heard Tom Waits number...
performed in a manner that left me a little breathless. Bravo.

As part of the 2013
Brits Off Broadway

one-woman show The Girl I Left Behind Me, co-written
and directed by Neil Bartlett.
Already critically acclaimed, the show pays tribute to the artistry
and glamour of the often outrageous cross-dressing women of the
British music hall and American variety stages, taking a
provocatively contemporary look at what it means when a woman wears
the trousers - on stage. More information about the show can be
